Website security basics every small business should know

2 October 2026

Simple, practical steps South African businesses can take to protect their website, customer data and reputation.

Why security matters for small businesses

Smaller businesses are often targeted because their websites are less protected. A compromised site can damage trust, hurt your Google ranking and put customer information at risk, which also matters under POPIA.

The basics

  • Use HTTPS on every page
  • Keep your website platform, plugins and themes updated
  • Use strong, unique passwords and two step verification for admin accounts
  • Take regular backups and test that they can be restored
  • Limit who has admin access
  • Use security headers and a firewall where possible

Watch for warning signs

Unexpected redirects, unknown admin users, spam pages or browser warnings can mean something is wrong. Act quickly if you notice any of them.
